The Two Faces of God

Jan 24, 2013 | Uncategorized

In this age and day, we usually hear of only a few this about: God is good, God is powerful, God is provider and healer and so many “positive” things. These are all true by the way. There is nothing wrong with any of them. In fact, i urge you to put those things in mind.

What i do want to point out that God has some aspects that some people may avoid talking about. One of these is what we can read in Deuteronomy 4:24 where it says, “The Lord your God is a devouring fire; he is a jealous God.”

God is a devouring fire, whew! Do you hear that get preached frequently? No, we don’t. Its not a “practical” teaching to many and is not overly emphasized on Sundays.

But think about it for a while. If you know that God has this nature, would you have second thoughts about sinning? I surely would. But unlike the Old Testament times, we do not see or experience God as a devouring fire. The Israelites did and over 600,000 men got “devoured” in the wilderness because they rebelled against God.

We do hear these words time and time again that comes from the same chapter but a little further down in Deuteronomy 4:31, “For the Lord your God is a merciful God; he will not abandon you or destroy you or forget the solemn covenant he made with your ancestors.” This is what we hear all time. This verse is what gets preached on Sundays.

My friends, let us not forget the other “face” of God so that we may have second thoughts when we are in the middle if temptations. As much as God is a merciful God,he is also a devouri God, for me this mean that God is a righteous and just God whol will not allow sin to rule in this world. God will consume those who will not turn beck from sin and repent.

When we remember that God is good, that God is merciful and that He is kind and compasionate, let us also remember that God Is also just, a devouring fire that will consume those who sins against Him and does not turn back.
