LISTEN TO THE DEVOTIONAL
We all have someone we’d rather not forgive.
Two men are assigned to the same team at work. They come from different tribes with multi-generational histories of violence. One remembers stories his father told him. The other carries deep grief over what his family lost. Forced into daily contact, both feel the pain, anger, and suspicion that comes with wounds this deep.
That tension has a thousand faces—different neighborhoods, different histories, different wounds. But the weight of unforgiveness feels the same.
Forgiveness, in moments like this, doesn’t feel simple. Trying to repair the rift feels impossible, maybe even unsafe. The Bible doesn’t pretend forgiveness is easy. The apostle Paul once approved of violence against Christians, standing by as people were arrested and killed (Acts 8:1). Then Paul encountered Jesus. And where did Paul go next? Into the very communities he had once helped destroy.
Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you. Ephesians 4:32
Imagine the tension: “Can we trust him? Should we forgive him?” When Paul later wrote, “forgive one another,” he was speaking as someone who had lived inside the discomfort, both as someone who needed forgiveness and who had to walk humbly among those he had hurt (Ephesians 4:32). Forgiveness doesn’t mean forgetting the past or pretending trust is immediate. It doesn’t remove the need for wisdom or accountability.
Healing begins when we choose not to pass the pain forward. Because when we refuse to forgive, hurt travels across families and generations. But when we forgive, even in small ways, we enter the slow, costly work of peace.
In Jesus, forgiveness isn’t just a gift we receive. We learn to live it and give it. Where is God inviting you to begin?
